Cook-Rutledge Mansion
The finest example of Victorian Italianate architecture in the Midwest. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A lavish red brick house with carved bric-a-brac, a graceful veranda with extending portcochere, and iron cresting surmounting the roof and cupola. Completely restored and filled with period correct furnishings.
Extraordinary hand painted ceilings and walls, ornately hand carved woodwork, original gas/electric chandeliers, lincrusta wall covering, paper mache crown moldings, handcrafted silver door knobs and hinges, stained glass windows, and five fireplaces, each with a mirror and imported tile face. Tours are guided by highly trained Docents. The Mansion is decorated for the Christmas season and open for tours and the Christmas Open House, the first Sunday in December. The Summer Solstice Art Faire is held at the Mansion in June. The Mansion is transformed to a House in Mourning, focusing on Victorian mourning customs. The Mansion is also available for weddings, receptions and special events. Check the website for specific dates and details.
