Back in 1996, when our web master Matt Knowles was first introduced to the World Wide Web, he was amazed by the amount of information that was freely available. Back then the Internet was a community, not the commercial monster it has since become. He wanted to give back to this virtual community, and decided that the Internet needed a good list of historic homes that were open to the public.

For over two decades, Matt has maintained this list, and in that time the web has changed drastically. Originally, the house museum information was all hand coded in HTML. Beginning in 2015, the entries were gradually converted into a database with custom coding to allow searches and attach photos. In 2022, the directory was once again ported and updated using a WordPress plugin that provides mapping, and better search capabilities.

Please understand that the Victorian Preservation Association does not manage these museums. If you have questions about a specific museum, please contact that museum directly.
